Mobile Bicycle Parking Facilities for Hamburg

Flexible setup and demand testing

The mobile platforms with 6 bicycle racks are set up temporarily and offer space for up to 12 bicycles. This allows us to evaluate, on-site and in practice, the level of demand and acceptance at each location. On the other hand, the mobile platforms can also be used in locations where demand has already been identified, but the planning phase is still ongoing and temporary coverage is needed. Sometimes the mobile bike parking facility is also used when parking spaces need to be replaced due to construction work. Since the platforms are designed to be installed on car parking spaces, they are also flexibly deployable in areas with limited space.

Your bike, your neighborhood, your voice

The mobile bike parking facility gives you the opportunity to actively shape your neighborhood: If the new parking space makes your daily life easier, it has already proven its worth — because as soon as you lock your bike there, you've cast your vote with “Yes to this bike parking spot!” Since we regularly monitor usage at the test locations, we learn how frequently the parking spaces are used.

High demand in many cases

Since the beginning of the test phase, the districts have commissioned the installation of permanent bike racks at some former test locations. Up to twelve bikes can then fit in an area roughly the size of a car parking space. That’s the mobility transition in action.

Role model: The Netherlands

The idea of testing demand and usefulness on a small scale with mobile parking platforms comes from Rotterdam. Other cities have since followed suit to address the shortage of parking spaces and to flexibly create mobile parking spaces quickly and with minimal coordination. This makes them a highly effective tool. The Dutch original is called “Fietsvlonders”, meaning “bike platforms.”
